Of course, you can always just wander up into the remote regions of the Rockies and build a house. Once you live there for 7 years without anyone saying anything, it's yours. At least that's what I've always heard.

This wouldn't apply to England though, as it's too small to be of any use...

Hmmmmm good points! I have no idea what the laws are like here. However, if you really fall in love with a place, it might even be worth all the hassles... and surely even backpaying the taxes wouldnt be too expensive on a house thats worth next to nothing. Still it would be good to be prepared and know the laws before going ahead.

I'm wondering if there's a catch. For instance, do you have to pay back taxes on the property? Once you own it, you will definitely have to pay taxes on it, right? You do have property taxes in the UK, I'm guessing. In fact, in the US, one can claim property that taxing entites foreclose for back taxes. All that's necessary is to pay the taxes owed. However, the hitch is that the prior owner can come in within 5 years, bring those same taxes up to date, and reclaim the property. And if you bought it for the back taxes, you don't get any of that back. At least that's how things work in our state.
