SAY NO TO THE FAIR TRADE AREA OF THE AMERICAS
The FTAA will undermine poor people’s access to affordable medicines and put back the fight against poverty by years.
The US and other rich countries promised to ensure that global trade rules on patents should not limit poor peoples access to medicines. But now the US is breaking its promise – putting pressure on poor countries to adopt ultra-strict patent rules during discussions aimed at creating a giant free trade zone – the FTAA. Higher drug prices in this free trade zone, which covers 34 countries across North and South America and the Caribbean, will push the price of medicines even further beyond the reach of millions of poor people.
