{"id":1675,"date":"2004-07-14T18:07:29","date_gmt":"2004-07-14T22:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yummy-wakame.com\/archives\/2004\/07\/14\/\/"},"modified":"2004-07-14T18:07:29","modified_gmt":"2004-07-14T22:07:29","slug":"1675","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yummy-wakame.com\/weblog\/2004\/07\/1675\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/england\/2988025.stm\" rel=\"external\">UK Animal cruelty on increase<\/a>, this came as great news today!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/pics\/scarletts-kitten.jpg\" alt=\"one of Scarlett's kittens\" class=\"oldblogthumb\" \/><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk\/3891119.stm\" rel=\"external\">Overhaul for UK animal welfare laws<\/a><br \/>The biggest crackdown on animal cruelty for nearly a century has been unveiled by the UK government.<\/strong><br \/>&bull; It will allow RSPCA inspectors to intervene earlier when there is a risk of cruelty and raise maximum sentences for such offences.<br \/>&bull; Funfairs will no longer be able to give animals, including goldfish, as prizes, the draft Animal Welfare Bill states.<br \/>&bull; Children under 16 will be banned from buying a pet, and cosmetic docking of dogs&#8217; tails will be outlawed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/pics\/goldfish.jpg\" alt=\"goldfish\" class=\"oldblogthumb\" \/><strong>Under the new law, owners will be given a &#8220;duty of care&#8221;. The draft Bill obliges the keeper of an animal to ensure its welfare by:<\/strong><br \/>&bull; Providing a suitable environment<br \/>&bull; Providing adequate food and water<br \/>&bull; Allowing it to exhibit normal behaviour<br \/>&bull; Allowing it to be housed with\/apart from its own or other species<br \/>&bull; Allowing appropriate protection from and diagnosis and treatment of pain, injury and disease.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/pics\/kitten2.jpg\" alt=\"Kitten\" class=\"oldblogthumb\" \/><strong>Maximum penalties will be increased from a six-month jail term and a &pound;5,000 fine to a 51-week prison sentence and a &pound;20,000 fine.<\/strong> The RSPCA hopes these provisions will be used to ban the use of animals in circuses which &#8220;due to their transient nature, cannot guarantee an ongoing high standard of care&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With UK Animal cruelty on increase, this came as great news today!
