Not only because of disease and loss of habitat, but simply because we are killing them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And eating them.<\/p>\n<p>New Scientist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/channel\/opinion\/dn9503.html\" rel=\"external\">reported<\/a> last week on the international trade in what is euphemistically referred to as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbushmeat&#8217;. Primates, including chimpanzees and gorillas, are hunted and killed \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the meat sold illegally at markets in Paris, Brussels, London, New York, Montreal, Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simply a case of economics. People in rich nations \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcexotic&#8217; tastes \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are prepared to pay big money for bushmeat. Whole african communities are supported by this.
