It was accessible, comforting and lavish. Rosaries, chasubles, fringed and gold-threadwork stoles, mitres, chalices, stained glass, sculpture, icons, missals and holy cards with gold-leaf edges, chanting, Latin singing and liturgy, repetitious prayers, processions and choruses.
