Wow! Sharp Corp. have unveiled a prototype pc that runs on a tiny piece of glass – a revolutionary step forward in creating ultra-flat ‘sheet computers’ and ‘sheet TVs’. This technique will allow other devices like LCDs, their drivers and power supplies to be integrated with the same plate of glass, embedded in a silicon membrane, something considered impossible until now.
The prototype is a functioning tiny circuit board from a Sharp CPU originally made in 1977 – imprinted on a piece of glass 15mm square and 1mm thick, with a computing power of 8 bits and a speed of 2.5 megahertz, and is based on CG silicon technology. Sharp Corp. will bring out the first products and gadgets in 2005.
