Amina Lawal Case Update
On 23/01/2002, the Upper Sharia Court of Appeal of Katsina announced that the hearing of Amina Lawal’s appeal against her sentence would take place today. The case had to be adjourned until June 3 after only two members of a four man panel of judges turned up, pushing the trial back until after next month’s national elections. Amina was sentenced to death by stoning, as soon as her baby girl has been weaned. Her crime: having a child out of wedlock in Nigeria. This will entail burying Amina up to her waist and stoning her until she is dead.
International human rights groups have worked hard to raise the profile of this case and fighting for her rights as they did last year for Safiya Hussaini, who was finally aquitted. As usual there were no charges made against the men who fathered these children.
