The Guardian published this article yesterday. Although it shows one side of the Afrikaner, it is a great pity that it does not explore the other sides too. I am an Afrikaner, but refuse to accept that I fall into this category. There were and indeed also are Afrikaners that never accepted the apartheid regime, Afrikaners that have worked against it and also fought for freedom and equality in SA. I was lucky enough to grow up in a home where apartheid was definitely NOT supported, and where respect for people, regardless of their colour was the top priority. And there are many Afrikaners that were and are the same. This is reflected in various groups, attitudes, music, festivals, poetry, literature, etc. And although it may even be trendy to be like that at present, it is something that has come a long way, long before the ‘great change of 1994’.
It would be nice if the media actually picked up on these people too. South Africa is a diverse country, with amazing people, varied cultures and a good, positive atmosphere.
