Wireless Networking at Home
DG834g Wireless Netgear ADSL Firewall RouterOn Friday I replaced our standard BT ADSL Modem with the Netgear Wireless ADSL Firewall Router (DG834G) for a completely wire-free network at home. Its an Integrated ADSL Modem and 802.11g Wireless Firewall Router with 4 Port Switch that has won many recent awards, and I highly recommend it.

When you install it at first from the host PC you need to use network cable to connect to the router, but after that you can disconnect the cables and connect to the router using a wireless network adapter (I recommend using a Netgear adapter). The installations was painless and easy. Things start getting complicated when you want to start using encryption security (highly recommended for your security!) as we had problems with the connection dropping, but there are 3 types of security to choose from, and one of them worked perfectly for us. Instead of dialing in, the router dials in once and stays permanently conncted to the ISP. Now both our laptops can be used anywhere in the house wire-free, and we can make changes to the router through a web interface.

We could even share our ADSL with the neighbours if we wanted to – all they need is a Wireless adapter and our encryption key.
