A sweeter deal for poor farmers – WTO rule against EU sugar dumping
Last week saw a World Trade Organisation panel rule that EU sugar dumping in poor countries is illegal. Following on from an earlier WTO verdict against US cotton subsidies, we’re seeing unfair agricultural subsidies topple one by one, and a fairer chance for poor farmers to make a living.
Oxfam estimates that US cotton dumping cost Africa more than $300m between 2001 and 2002, while Mozambique, Malawi and Ethiopia have lost $238m since 2001 as a result of restricted access to Europe’s markets for their sugar.
