SUV Explorer ExpressWith the ongoing oil crisis and lack of space in cities, it seems crazy that people are still selfishly buying massive oil-guzzling SUVs, causing even more of an oil shortage, climate changes, and space problems for the rest of us. They would have a hard time finding parking in Brighton – just as well as we don’t want them here.

Sian Berry is campaigning hard to stop the SUV menace. The idea is you ticket offending vehicles in any urban areas in the UK, giving the driver and nosy passers by information the ads dont tell you about their choice.

StopUrban4x4s.org.uk
A group of grassroots campaigns and organisations which is calling for concrete measures to stop giant 4x4s taking over London. Ideas include increased congestion charge of £20 in London and increased road tax, as well as ending misleading 4×4 advertisements in the mainstream media.

These ideas you may or may not agree with. Its all very well taxing someone for their impact on the environment, but it seems really wealthy people are able to buy themselves peace of mind too easily. If you can afford to dish out loads of money because your actions are causing global warming, that money can never reverse the affects of the damage. The same goes for paying a high price for eating or hunting endangered species of animals or eating tortured animals (like Foie Gras). “It’s okay. I paid for the privilege. That’s my penance”. Why should the super rich be allowed to cleanse their consciences in this way and continue the endless damage while the rest of us work our butts off to reverse the effects of what they are doing to the planet?

I think manufacturers and retailers of urban SUVs should be taxed so high that it becomes unprofitable to sell them. Of course there will always be some status-conscious label queen willing to pay the extortionate prices just to prove how big his gonads are, but at least he’ll have a hard time finding one, whereas at the moment they are all over the place.
