Oh for an extra hour in the day
Did you know that our internal clock runs at a 25 and a half hour day? This has always made me wonder whether we are from another planet.
“The circadian cycle is the biological clock in each of us. It regulates the body temperature, alertness, and works together with the 24-hour clock. Most people are up and awake during the day, and asleep at night. (The exception for shift workers.)
If you put people in a laboratory environment, with no light, no TV, no clocks, a VCR that doesn’t know the time, and take away all cues to time, people don’t know what time it is. But they have to be able to control the lighting. They will set their time every 25-and-1/2 hours, but they think it’s 24 hours. The light we are exposed to and the alarm clock serves to set our biological clock every day. In a laboratory, it was found that sleep and wakefulness is all controlled by the circadian clock and the circadian cycle operates without input from the outside world. Some people run a little fast; others run a little slow.”
