Creepy

friendsterFriendster, an online service supposedly aimed at helping people meet and become friends on the Internet, is incredibly creepy.

I was bullied into signing up by a few of my friends and eventually caved, against my own good judgement. The service is atrocious, you’ll get updates in your email stating that “Soandso has sent you a message” only to find out that your inbox with Friendster is empty. The message sometimes shows up a few days later.

Anyway, I received this email from them today, which freaked me out in an arm-in-my-freezer sort of way:

“Not that we’ve been counting, but it’s been seven days since you signed up on Friendster. We figured that was enough time before we could email you.

Anyway, just emailing to say hi and let you know that we’ve been thinking about you. We hope you’ve been able to post your profile, put up some photos, invite friends and just chill out with some ‘you time.’ Now, if you’re up for it you can also do this stuff with us: ”

Where they proceeded to list several options I had, such as starting a blog (which only friendsters can view), writing a testimonial about one of my friends or inviting more people into Friendster subservience.
