Mbeki appoints South Africa’s first female deputy president
President Thabo Mbeki has appointed Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, minerals and energy minister, as deputy president to replace Jacob Zuma, who was sacked last week.
You may or may not have heard that the previous deputy president, Jacob Zuma, was swiftly axed because he faces charges of fraud and corruption.

Well thats exactly why this news is so big and so encouraging. Other African countries watch South Africa closely.
South Africa is in so many ways a beacon of hope and is an example to all the other African countries because it has emerged as a successful democracy out of apartheid in only a few years, and has the largest and most well-developed economy of the entire African continent.

This would really gladden my heart if I hadn’t read all the other stories of atrocities committed against women in other parts of Africa. The situation in so many countries there is so grim for women.
