UK finally gets 24Mbps broadband
New ISP Be is offering a 24Mbps broadband service, which dwarfs the top speeds currently on offer from the likes of BT and Bulldog.
Be is using ADSL2+ technology to double download bandwidth, together with unbundling BT’s local-loop exchanges in order to offer the service. Be said the rollout will start in London to be followed swiftly with the rest of the UK. Full Be rollout plans and prices have yet to be finalised. Be is the first operator in the UK to use Alcatel’s next-generation DSLAM connectivity equipment in BT’s exchanges, along with aggregation and routing equipment, to help achieve the high bandwidth.
Cable & Wireless-owned Bulldog currently offers the highest broadband download speed to users, at 8Mbps. After starting in London, Bulldog now offers a national broadband service and charges between £8 and £29.50 for its monthly packages.
