“Imagine if your next Mac cost you only $300, and ran faster than any G4 or G5 you’ve ever used.
That future may already be unfolding: Hackers have found a way to bypass a chip designed to prevent the Mac OS from running on non-Apple PCs, which are often cheaper than Macs. ” –Wired News
That’s right, they’ve discovered a way to run OSX on a PC—with better performance rates—which, in essence, disproves Apple’s claim that because they build the machines and the software, they provide a superior product (which hasn’t been true for years anyway). This could finally be the launching board that Macs need to get into the mainstream and give Microsoft a genuine run for their money. Of course, once Grandma can afford an iBook, the indie community might not be so keen on wanting one as well…

It seems like it was only yesterday that the Mac went over to Power Pc from the 680×0 series chip. It would really suck having to buy all that software over yet again. Not that I’m a windows lover but is it really worth trying to upgrade your new Mac again. New OS, New hardware, new software.
I also doubt that the mac will become that cheap unless Apple decides to let third party solutions come into play again. There goes the standardization we all love about having a Mac in the first place.
Personally I don’t think Apple can survive as just a software company with the odd iPods technology.
It seems the Macintosh is approaching the point where the amiga was in 1992. By ’93 the last Amiga was churned out.
