Cultures On The Edge – Photographic Exhibit
Wow! Photographer Pablo Corral Vega walked the whole of the Andes, from the very southern tip of South America to the North, documenting it through stunning photography along the way. His photographs and stories have been published in National Geographic, Lonely Planet and he is currently working on a photographic book capturing the essence of the Andes. The project encompasses the entire mountain range, from Patagonia to the Caribbean.

Cool, I’ve been to the Venezuelan Andes and To Chiloe (Chile). Back in 89, during a particularly nasty winter in the States, my girlfriend and I decided to fly to Venezuela and see my family, thinking we would frolick in the Caribbean. My family decided to go to the Andes, and we were colder than we would have been in the States. We were at a lovely inn, but they did not care for heating. The temperature was zero centigrades outside and about two inside. They had a most ridiculous single burning log in a cavernous fireplace (ha,ha!).
Chiloe is a pretty remote island. In fact, until the beginning of the 20th century, this island was still loyal to the Spanish crown (Chile became independent from Spain some 80 years earlier). The folklore of the island is fantastic, and a portiion fo the island still has the original forest, as it would have been before colonizers arrived three hundred years ago or so. Were it not for the thriving salmon industry in the nearby port of Puerto Montt, the island would still remain in the 19th century.
