A letter from her father…

“You know that it’s inevitable, so you might as well give in and resign yourself to approaching middle age in graduate school. …it’s inevitable because deep down it promises to be at least as fulfilling and it is likely to be considerably more fulfilling than alternatives. Any job that focuses on individuals–and I don’t care if it’s being a social worker, an animal-fixer and lover, a lawyer (I speak from experience), or anything else–will in time chew you up and spit you out, a burned out vestige of what all or your dreams and aspirations might have been. The system is just too relentless, the cast of characters too repetitious, to sustain a career where you aspire to do good on an individual level…”
